Have you ever worked out what your true cost of down-time is?

This is a question you should pay close attention to, because if you have server hardware failure, or if Ransomware finds you, the time will be ticking faster than you can imagine and with every second your systems are down, money is pouring out the front door of your business.

More than 50% of businesses in Britain were targeted by Ransomware in 2016!

Did you know that more than 50% of businesses in Britain were targeted by Ransomware in 2016 and this number is on the rise! Ransomware has brought us in to a digital world of criminals and crooks and the scary thing about it is these criminals are getting away with it!

So, before we focus on how to prevent this from happening to your business, let’s discuss the true cost of down-time and the importance of a business continuity plan.

Firstly, let’s talk about your employees and what they would all be doing without access to their emails or the network? What does each employee cost your business per hour? What industry are you in? For example, if you’re in manufacturing, are your machines relying on the network? If these go down, what would this cost the business?

Restoring from a backup drive could take a full day, or even two!

If you currently backup your data using a portable backup drive, do you know how long it would take to restore everything? Not only would you need to reload Windows, you would need to restore all your emails and data, third party software and a whole lot more! Depending on what systems you are running and how much data you have, this could take a full day, or even two. How would you continue business with your customers with no email or network available? How would this reflect on your company’s reputation if you were down this long?

As you can imagine, these things happening all at once could have a detrimental effect on your business. So, what can you do to ensure business stays running at all times, with as little down-time as possible?

I’m sure you are prepared in case there is a fire at your premises by taking out business insurance, but the odds are there is very little chance that there will ever be a fire. When you look at the Ransomware attacks and statistics in the UK alone however, there is a very high chance this will affect your business one day.

The time it takes to restore this data is just as crucial.

Making sure you are backing up your data daily is a good start, but the time it takes to restore this data is just as crucial. So, if you are using a portable backup drive it’s a good idea to do a trial run of a backup restore and see how long this would take. My guess would be a lot longer than you expected.
